2023 Recap

The 2023 Checking For Charity continued it's successful run of fun hockey for some great causes! The fans filled William B. Troubh Arena to help us support the Maine Cancer Foundation and many other great organizations!

A special THANK YOU to Bill David (www.twelvenorthagency.com) and Jeff Mannix (the voice of the University of Maine Men's Hockey) for their continued support to help us live-stream the event around the world.

The Red Riot Challenge continued its trend of hard fought competition. The game features former Red Riot hockey players squaring off for another year of bragging rights. The game was tied 4-4 at the half. Team Red Goalie Liam McGibbon allowed only 2 goals in the second half and the Team Red offense found the net 6 times to take home a 10-6 win! Team Red scoring was led by Garrett Arnold (4 g) and DJ Conley (3 g-1 a). Team White was led by Tim Clark and Robbie Pascale (each with 2g-1a)

A new feature was the addition of the South Portland Middle School skills competition! These future Red Riots showcased their skills which included speed skating, shooting accuracy, shot speed, and breakaways. The crowd loved the player's enthusiasm!

The Firefighter Classic has always been a battle with crewmates and friends competing for bragging rights at the station! Firefighters from South Portland were joined as always by firefighters from the surrounding communities. An exciting addition to the rosters were two Maine hockey legends! Steve Tsujiura was a professional hockey player for over 15 years and a fan favorite in his time with the Maine Mariners. Terry Murray played 20 years of professional hockey and then coached in the NHL for 15 seasons. He was also a Maine Mariner!

The Firefighter Classic continued its tradition of close battles in most due to the amazing play of the goalies. Team White goalie Liz Bergstrom (Univ. of Southern Maine '15) and Carissa Gordon (Nashua Panthers/Wells FD). Team Red came away with the 5-3 win in a game that was close  throughout!

The marquee matchup of the day is always the Former Pro Showdown!   The fast paced game is always a thrill for all the fans! Team White came out fast and took a 3-0 lead after 1 period on goals from Erik Rousseau and a pair from Bobby Kinsey. Team  Red cut the lead to 1 on goals from Trevor Fleurent and Michel Leveille. Team white answered those goals with 2 of their own from Petr Nasveschuk and Paul Navrart. Then Team Red put the pressure on with goals from Chris Ledwick and Ryan Delaney. Team White goalie Brandon Gervais made several acrobatic saves in the closing minutes to preserve the 5-4 victory!
